The Experience of the United States Military with Village Women in Afghanistan:
A United States military member who spent a long time serving in Afghanistan shared his experiences with the women in one Afghanistan village.
The United States military discovered the difficulty that the village women in Afghanistan have getting clean water. These women did not have easy access to clean drinking water. The women have to walk a very long distance in the hot sun while carrying their water containers on their head. They returned home after trekking for long hours with heavy loads and very tired.
Lack of clean drinking water resulted in various kinds of illness and high mortality rate among the villagers. The United States military in Afghanistan saw all of these issues and decided to help them out by digging wells. This was supposed to be a simple solution that will make life easier for the women and people of this village in Afghanistan.
To the greatest surprise of the United States Military, as soon as the wells were built, the women in this Afghanistan village would destroy these wells.
Why were the women in this Afghanistan Village destroying these wells?
After a long search for reasons and answers, the United States Military found out that long journey to the other villages in the hot sun to get water was more important to the women than having clean water wells in their village. The wells deprived them of the happy life they enjoyed by removing four key elements of happiness from them.
The 4 Key Elements to the Happy Life
1. Freedom
Nothing beats living in a world where you are not under another person’s control or terms. Freedom empowers and enables you to choose what you want, where you want and with whom you want. When a village woman who has been caged by her husband through culture, finally gets the chance to step out of her confinement, she experiences the gift of freedom. Even though this freedom might be for a day to get water, the feeling is so fulfilling to her. It was the only way for the village women to experience freedom in their lives. Freedom is very essential for the happy life you deserve.

2. Income
The women in the Afghanistan village hated the clean water wells provided by the United States military. Owing to the fact, that it was blocking their source of income.
Getting water was a source of income to the women because they had no jobs. During their long distance trek to other villages for water, they would stop along the way and sell small items to women in those villages to earn a little money from their crafts and handiwork.
Being rich is not a ticket to happiness neither does being poor. While money doesn’t buy happiness; income is a necessity for happiness because it ensures survival. Income bracket or one’s level of income is not a real determinant of happiness. However, having some type of income is necessary to meet the demands of human existence. Even though income is usually quantified in money, it should not be misconstrued with money or wealth.
According to Merriam-Webster dictionary: “income is a gain or recurrent benefit usually measured in money that derives from capital or labor.” Money is only a means to store the value or gain from your capital or labor. So, if your goal is the happy life don’t go around chasing money.
3. Friendship
True happiness in life requires great relationships. And friendship is one of the highest forms of relationship that can exist between two or more people. It’s easier to make enemies than friends. Strong friendships are very difficult to find as well as maintain. Friendship is one of the most important bonds that makes the turmoil in life bearable. No cohesive, helpful and flourishing environment exists without friendship.

The long distance trek with other women gave the women of this Afghanistan village the opportunity to make new friends. And also, enjoy the company of one another as they stopped at some distances to get some rest.
4. Sharing
Life is all about sharing. Sharing is a key essential to a happy life.

Walking long distances to get water was the primary channel for the Afghanistan village women to share news of what is happening, tell their stories, give advice and learn from one another.
