The Most Ignored Threat to Our Future. Empowering the Younger Generation.

Today’s youth is plagued with so much pressure, expectations and minimal encouragement in the quest for identity in a world full of numerous distractions. Yet many have not seen the need to empower the younger generation?

A few months ago, CBS News reported an alarming rise in youth suicide: “rates of teen depression and suicide have skyrocketed since 2011.” What factors contribute to this trend? Do you think anything can be done to stop this?

As the younger generation battles identity issues, low morale and contempt, who will be their hero? Who is willing to step in and save the day? 

With the rising rate of depression and suicide among youths the need to help grow, develop and navigate the younger generation through life’s challenges has become a mandate for the older and more experienced generation.

Why is youth empowerment necessary? 

As former British prime minister,  Benjamin Disreali rightly put it: ” the youths of a nation are the trustees of posterity.” This goes to say that there is no hope for the future when you write-off today’s younger generation.

How do you empower the youth? 

Rather than condemn, the older and more experienced ones should uphold the duty to ‘PET’ the younger and inexperienced ones. To help the younger generation reach their potential and thrive you have to ‘P.E.T’ them. Here’s what these three letters stand for:

P:  Placement

To empower the youths, you must place resources within their control. Give them something that they can bring to the table unique to them. To help the youths thrive, you do not want to let them live in a vacuum. Fill up their lives with responsibilities and keep them accountable. Before you place an expectation on the younger generation, ensure that you have equipped them with adequate resources. Resources could be people, books, tools and technology they could leverage to reach deeper levels of their creativity.

E:  Exposure

A sure way to sharpen and bring out the gifts that already exist in  people is to expose them to uncommon grounds. Exposing youths to healthy challenges grows their confidence.  It is necessary to expose the younger and inexperienced generation to a daily growth plan. These plans could be camps, groups, webinars, meetings, conferences that will motivate them to make positive decisions capable of creating fresh energy and willingness to embark on rewarding experiences. Exposure produces enlightenment which in turn fosters youth empowerment.

T: Teach

You don’t train them until you teach them. Most people focus on training rather than teaching. The goal of training is HOW it is done where as the goal of teaching is the WHY and HOW it is done, needs to done and should be done. Many people are well trained at what they do but don’t know why they do it.  To be trained you have to be taught. When you teach the younger generation you inspire them, and greatness is born out of inspiration.

World-famous author and editor H. Clay Trumbull asserted, “It has been said that the essence of teaching is causing another to know. It may similarly be said that the essence of training is causing another to do.”

Training encompasses all of the steps above. When you ‘PET’ a young one, you are equipping them with skills to thrive and this the definition of empowerment through purposeful training.

To secure our future and minimize or rid our society of the ever-increasing menace troubling our youths, we have to take out the time to empower our younger generation.
