About 42 percent of college graduates never read another book after college according to a survey conducted by Jenkins Group. Does this mean that many people are failing to educate themselves once their formal education is over? Have you read any book or picked up a new skill in the past year? Learning a new skill or subject may start small but as you continue the learning process you start becoming even more valuable. And with this increased value comes a boost in your self-confidence.
2. Improve Your Financial Condition
As the saying goes, the more you learn the more you earn. Despite the amount of time one spent to acquire a graduate degree, the knowledge and skill acquired are insufficient to sustain a 10-year career. The high rate of scientific and technological advancement is the major contributor. Lifelong learning is very vital, especially in highly compensated careers such as medicine, engineering and even leadership roles.
For instance, as an electrical engineer you will undergo 16 to 18 years of formal education. Fast-forward to 2 years, he sells the practice for several millions of dollars and moves on to build the life of his dreams.
There are endless examples of people who have improved their financial condition through lifelong learning. They increase their economic status by continuously learning the new and evolving techniques in their industry. Likewise, you can join the ranks of the high earners by forming the habit of lifelong learning.
3. Expand Your Network
Conferences and events that expose you to new ways of thinking or skills give you high visibility to top achievers. Hence, expanding your network of people you can serve as well as people who can serve you.
With this in mind, consider yourself a real estate professional who helps people buy and sell houses. And you attend a real estate event on house flipping. In this event, investors, real estate agents, lenders, attorneys, insurance brokers, wholesalers and general contractors were attendees. Not only are you learning about house flipping, you’re also meeting diverse real estate professionals that will be valuable to your network. The next time you have a buyer that needs to have some paint and flooring work done, you can connect that buyer to the general contractor. On the other hand, the contractor hopefully will connect potential buyers to you if he/she sees the need for your services. Also, the wholesaler you met at the event will start sending you great deals due to the great conversation you both had at the event.

4. Empower Others
All you can teach is all that you have learned. In fact, it is impossible to empower your kids, siblings and anyone that looks up to you if you lack the knowledge or experience to do so. For you to empower the younger generation, you will need to have acquired what it takes to do so. And lifelong learning enables you to be a source of empowerment.

Your niece can develop an affinity for making dresses and go on to become a fashion designer or women’s clothing tailor. Consequently, your learning becomes an empowerment to the people around you.
In summary, lifelong learning benefits you and the people who come in contact with you. It is one of the few rewarding activities that you can do over a lifetime. Choose to read a book today. Pick up a new skill. Expose yourself to new experiences. Sign up for, and attend training conferences. And become a lifelong learner.
